A neighborhood built on a racetrack

The heart of Condesa —the Hipódromo colonia— was laid out in the 1920s over what was once a horse-racing track. That's why Avenida Ámsterdam forms a perfect oval: it follows the outline of the old track. Around it grew one of Latin America's largest concentrations of Art Deco architecture, with curved façades, geometric ironwork and 1930s detailing that give Condesa its unmistakable look.

Location and getting around

Condesa sits at the geographic center of the city, next to Roma and steps from Chapultepec forest. It's best explored on foot or by bike: the neighborhood is flat, shaded and full of Ecobici stations. Metrobús Line 1 on Insurgentes and the Metro (Chapultepec, Patriotismo, Sevilla) connect it to the rest of the city in minutes.
